Course description
This course aims to develop advanced knowledge in how to conduct an ethnographic study in terms of data collection and analysis. The course covers how to structure a study in a coherent manner by integrating theory and empirical material. It includes both traditional and new methods in the discipline and discusses their scientific potential and limitations. It also addresses questions relating to problem formulation, research questions, data analysis, research ethics and academic style.
Target group
The course is mandatory for PhD students in Social anthropology at SGS. The course is also open for PhD students in anthropology at other universities in Sweden and in the Nordic countries, and for PhD students in other disciplines who apply ethnographic methods.
Requirements and Selection
Entry requirements
General entrance requirements for studies in the third cycle.
Selection
The course is limited to 6 participants, with the following priorities:
1. PhD students at the School of Global studies, University of Gothenburg
2. PhD students in Social Anthropology at other Swedish or Nordic universities
3. PhD student in other disciplines who apply ethnographic methods. Applicants in this category need to submit a short document (max 1 page) where they motivate why they should be admitted to the course.
Other information
The course is full time and takes place on campus. The language of instruction is English.
